In Sonic Frontiers, he will tout a full suite of combat abilities with kicks, punches, whirlwinds and all sorts of flashy combo moves. Sonic Team has elected to give the blue blur a much more comprehensive moveset than the usual run, jump, dash and ground-stomp. If anything, I’m more worried about the objectives between exploration. But from what’s been shown so far, Sonic’s breakneck speed and surprisingly smooth movement is sure to make navigating cliffs, towers and rolling hills a delight. I have limited fondness for open world games – too often, they are filled with pointless diversions and repetitive content to pad out the run time. With smooth-looking movement, plenty of new landscapes and a plethora of reimagined older level themes represented in the game’s “cyberspace” levels, Sonic Frontiers is looking inspired and impressive. Plenty of hobbyists and journalists were able to play a hands-on demo at Gamescom in late August, and the vast majority of them came away with positive feedback. I’m happy to report that more recent demonstrations of the game are more intriguing. The first footage of the game, revealed by IGN on May 31, was uninspiring – all it did was show Sonic the Hedgehog scaling a massive obelisk and grinding his way down before exploring some empty open plains. “The answer was a thankful and emphatic ‘Yes,’” Flynn says.Despite my love-hate relationship with the series, I’ve been rather silent regarding the upcoming Sonic Frontiers even with tons of new information and gameplay videos spilling in over the past few weeks. Then-editor Joe Hughes reached out to Flynn and asked if he was interested. The fans immediately jumped on the bandwagon to try and get Flynn on board. It wasn’t long after Archie Sonic’s cancelation that IDW announced it had gained the publishing rights to Sonic comics. If there was a new book, I hoped I might be involved in some capacity and point out all the talented folks I had worked with, but there were no guarantees.” All of that was gone in the blink of an eye. ![]() “It was my regular gig, a reliable source of income, and my dream job. “I was gutted and more than a little terrified,” he recalls. This was a gut punch to fans and the books’ creatives alike, Flynn included. Ian Flynnĭespite having preliminary plans for issue #300 and beyond, all Archie Sonic comics abruptly ceased production in 2017, with no explanation given. I was gutted and more than a little terrified. I’m a big fan of the current voice team, so it was a thrill to hear my script realized by them.”įlynn was riding high at this point, regularly penning three monthly Sonic comics and a handful of Sonic Boom TV scripts. It’s less of a blueprint and more of a strongly suggested set of directions. ![]() The TV script is structurally similar but doesn’t need to be as precise in its moment-to-moment descriptions. With TV, you have directors, storyboarders, animators, voice actors, and their directors, all influencing the final product. The editors and licensors have input, but the comic script is the blueprint for the art team. “In comics, there’s a very narrow pipeline from me to the artists. “ coached me on how to write for TV versus comics and workshopped some pitches with me,” Flynn says. Showrunner Bill Freiberger had communicated with then-editor Paul Kaminski to have some of the cartoon’s writers contribute to the comic, and vice versa. Sonic Boom, in particular, opened up a surprising new avenue for Flynn.
